Abstract

The model of an architectural asset can be considered as an ongoing form, much like the temporal evolution of an architectural organism [1]. The analysis presented here attempts to include the transformation process amongst its main components, bearing in mind that the ideation and status of cultural heritage are dynamic and change over time. Based on these premises, this article will analyse the former GIL building in Trastevere (Rome) designed by Luigi Moretti, a building-manifesto of Rationalism in Rome and an architecture on the borderline between tradition and functionalism [2]. The time variable has significantly influenced the building in question: at first the hub of the road network in this district, then a building isolated from its surroundings—when layouts and elevations were radically altered—and finally born to new life in 2017 (the WEGIL). This research proposes to standardise the collected data in order to create a multiple, integrated, consultable and updatable descriptive model, based on the reconstruction of the original project in a BIM environment. This method will make it possible to scientifically share knowledge about this cultural heritage as well as recreate the original project—at least virtually.
