Abstract

A large number of amphibians (ca 650 specimens representing 32 spp) and approx 1000 tadpoles were examined with a view to collecting their monogene and trematode parasites. The author describes 7 spp of Polystoma 2 of which are new: P. perreti sp.n. and P. vaucheri sp.n. Among the numerous larvae collected from the gills of 5 spp of tadpoles (Hylarana albolabris, Ptychadena aequiplicata, Leptopelis hyloides, Afrixalus d. dorsalis and Dicroglossus occipitalis) the neotenic larvae of 5 different spp are described; from 2 spp of tadpoles (Ptychadena aequiplicata and Dicroglossus occipitalis), 2 spp of preadult larvae and from 3 spp of tadpoles (Ptychadena aequiplicata, Leptopelis hyloides and Afrixalus d. dorsalis) 3 spp of gyrodactyloide II larvae. Neotenic larvae and preadult larvae were found on tadpoles of Ptychadena aequiplicata and Dicroglossus occipitalis whereas the adult parasites living in the bladder have not been found. The author has succeeded in obtaining experimental infestations in Ptychadena aequiplicata and Leptopelis hyloides. In the 7 spp of trematode studied, a new genus Parahaematoloechus gen.n. based of Rees, (1964) description of Haematoloechus exoterorchis Rees, 1964, is erected. Certain taxonomic and chronological considerations in the genus Mesocoelium following the publication of Freitas (1963) and of Maeder, Combes and Knoepffler (1969a), are also discussed
