Testosterone gets converted into the more potent 5-[alpha]- dihydrotestosterone by 5-[alpha]- reductase. dihydrotestosterone (DHT) controls prostate mitotic activity and potentially prostate carcinogenesis. Interventions that inhibit 5-[alpha]-reductase have potential as preventive agents for prostate cancer. © 2010 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
