Central to any successful career in academic medicine are certain core attributes, hard and soft skills, that can be developed over time. This chapter reviews critical attributes that help form the basis of one's career within academia. Execution and leadership skills are critical, but so too are interpersonal and communication skills. As one rises through academic ranks, emphasis shifts to mentorship and team building, often requiring a different skill set. Many of these skills can be honed and readily applied.
