Presents a review of Tokugawa era Japanese-language village studies with a commentary on the problems of Japanese historical geography. Discusses village studies, shinden or settlement of new lands, population research, changes in administrative divisions, and the relationship of land taxes to villages under the Tokugawa. There has been a tendency to neglect spatial development, a failure to clearly define concepts, and a failure to open underdeveloped fields within Japanese historical geography. Historical geography of the Tokugawa has progresses completely through the use of written documents.- Richard Louis Edmonds
