Because of its obvious importance for cell survival, translation is perhaps the most conserved of cellular mechanisms in evolution. However, in relatively recent years, and especially since the discovery of miRNAs, translational control has been recognized as being of central importance in a wide range of cellular processes, from differentiation to tumoral transformation.
