Abstract

The Fernando de Noronha Archipelago is located approximately at 546 km from the city of Recife, Pernambuco. Based on field collections carried out at July, 1986 at supra littoral, midlittoral and infialittora! zones, this paper presents a list of 106 species, consisting of 33 Chlorophyceae, 22 Phaeophyceae and 51 Rhodophyceae, and their distribution along the 11 sites visited at the northwestern side of the Fernando de Noronha and Rata Islands. From the identified species, 25 are hereby mentioned for the first time in this area. Comments on important taxonomic and ecologycal groups are presented.
