The prevalence of obesity in the United States has been increasing at an alarming rate over the past twenty years. According to the 2003 - 2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), approximately 66 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese. This has a dramatic effect on health care providers, who must equip their facilities with larger beds, larger wheelchairs and procedure tables capable of supporting weights approaching 1000 lbs (450 kg). © 2008 Springer Medizin Verlag Heidelberg.
