Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to summarize existing research on parent support and training that has relevance for promoting health and caring for health related problems in children who have IDD. Heath issues, for example, require that parents learn how to apply specialized symptom-focused protocols, implement preventive strategies, establish compliance with prescribed methods, and intervene to prevent and reduce challenging behavior that is often occasioned by invasive medical procedures. Parents are also responsible for adhering to physician ordered regiments such as administering medications and following therapeutic routines with their children. Our descriptions of parent training approaches further include recommendations for practitioners and as well, we refer the reader to other recent, good quality chapters on the topic.
