In 1890 Rydberg showed1 that for multielectron atoms the energy may be written in a form that resembles the now familiar −1/2n2 for the hydrogen atom. (In this chapter we use atomic units.) For multielectron atoms there is no accidental degeneracy as for the hydrogen atom so the expression for the energy should depend on both n and ℓ.
