Abstract

The existence of multinucleated giant cells — as distinguished from megakaryocytes — in bone has been known since the middle of the nineteenth century. Kölliker (1873) thought that these cells might represent the ‘agents of bone résorption’ and gave them the name of ‘osteoclasts’.
