Abstract

A review with 76 refs. on the structure and function of the water-oxidizing complex of photosystem II and the tyrosyl radical participation in water oxidn., as well as the key structural features of the photosystem II water-oxidizing complex as studied by EPR and Mn-EXAFS. The kinetics of photosynthetic water oxidn. and the nature of manganese oxo-clusters as catalysts for WOC are discussed. This review compares the biol. site to manganese- and ruthenium-contg. complexes as catalysts for artificial water oxidn. The kinetics and the mechanisms of water oxidn. by these Mn and Ru complexes are also presented. [on SciFinder(R)]
