It is bad luck for Kurt Stuwe that Geodynamics of the Lithosphere , an excellent book, has been published in the same year as the long‐awaited second edition of Geodynamics by D.H. Turcotte and G. Schubert. It is doubly bad luck that by publishing in paperback, the latter have undercut him by almost $25. Nevertheless, a comparison of the two books shows that they are, in many ways, complimentary and readers who are more geologically oriented will probably find Stuwe's book more readable and more easily accessible. In scope, Geodynamics of the Lithosphere is an interesting combination of breadth and focus. Not many textbooks include all three applications of the diffusion equation to heat flow, sediment transport, and chemical equilibration!
