A UPS study was carried out of Cu and Nb cluster ion beams using the general technique of pulsed metal cluster beams produced by laser vaporization. The UPS was obtained by photodetachment of the cluster anion. Since the target cluster is now an anion, it may be selected by mass prior to the UPS expt., eliminating all confusion caused by other clusters in the original beam. The UPS of the neg. clusters has the addnl. advantage of providing a direct measure of the band gap between the HOMO and the LUMO in the corresponding neutral metal cluster.
