This paper describes our work in developing the human-computer interface of an augmented reality (AR) system that has been designed to facilitate the accurate selection of real world locations in 3D space using 3D cursors. We detail the results of an experiment undertaken to highlight the benefit of certain features integrated into the design of a 3D cursor and the interface employed to manipulate the cursor. We conclude that object selection is aided by adding additional synthetic depth cues to the cursor and also by using constraints on the number of degrees of freedom exhibited by the cursor. © Springer-Verlag 2004.
