Abstract

Evidence-based medicine, patient safety, and development of characteristics that define high-quality care are foundational elements of the quality–safety movement. The surgical setting is an important focal point for these considerations. This chapter provides an overview of this important national effort and introduces such key concepts as effectiveness, patient centeredness, efficiency, and never events.
