Abstract

Entry into, and passage through, the two meiotic divisions of the oocyte has to be highly coordinated to ensure proper segregation of chromosomes. This coordination ensures that the hallmark stops and starts of the meiotic process occur at the right time to prevent aneuploidy. The Anaphase-Promoting Complex is an activity mostly studied in the mitotic cell cycle division, where it has essential functions during mitosis. As detailed here the Anaphase-Promoting Complex also plays vital roles in controlling at least three meiotic events: maintenance of prophase I arrest, timely and faithful segregation of homologous chromosomes in meiosis I, and the meiotic arrest following ovulation. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
