Gout is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the accumulation of monosodium urate crystals in the joints, soft tissues, and bones. It is the most common inflammatory arthritis in adults. Gout is the most manageable of all rheumatic diseases. If gout is not effectively treated, the disease becomes chronic and tofus formation occurs in the joints. To reduce recurrence, nurses should educate patients about treatment adherence and lifestyle changes. They also have role in symptom control during an acute exacerbation.
