Sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) contains a chromophore component of brazilein which can give red color when dissolved in water. The aim of the study was to see the effect of maceration and boiling extraction processes from sappan wood using water solvents on the dyeing of cotton and silk fabrics. The dyeing results gave pink, purplish red, brown and grayish brown. The dyeing of silk fabric with sappan wood extract using the boiling process provided a higher average color intensity compared to other treatments, with color fastness for washing, perspiration, lighting, and rubbing were sufficient to excellent.
