Abstract

Intensive urban land expansion in East Asia has caused the disappearance of many places of historical significance. The incongruent development in Kampong Bharu, a traditional urban village in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, could pose a threat to the social and economic sustainability of the existing community. Face-to-face interviews with the local authority and community leaders revealed their concerns to secure land ownership and to ensure that new development will benefit the community, socially and economically. The landowners and community leaders insisted on a change that suits their culture and way of life and preserve the identity of the place as a Malay enclave. For the place to transform naturally, adaptability to change and the ability to sustain its culture and socio-economy are the most vital factors. Giving greater voice to the people could provide a reference for effective redevelopment strategies towards a sustainable future of Kampong Bharu.
