Using Art-Based Techniques in Faculty Training Programmes

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of faculty members relating to the use of art-based techniques (i.e. sketching, drawing, graphic design, and lyric writing) in faculty training programmes at a university in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Ten participants were enrolled in a professional training workshop that was designed to enhance their teaching skills. The researcher argued that it was necessary to investigate the perceptions of faculty members held concerning the use of art-based techniques. From there, the researcher could assess the impact of adopting these approaches in professional training programmes. The study used a qualitative approach with multiple data collection methods that included observation, semi-structured interviews, member checking, and examination of participant artefacts. Findings revealed several common themes regarding the opportunities and issues that faculty members perceived with respect to using art-based techniques in professional training programmes. Recommendations for future research and implications for practice were offered.
