Using Responsive Web Design to Enhance the User Experience of Chronic Disease Management Portals for Clinical Users

Abstract

Chronic diseases are a major burden on health and welfare services both globally and in Australia. They are complex and often require advanced management. More recently, technology solutions such as web portals are being used to effectively manage chronic diseases. Such portals have the potential to play a crucial part in the care management, especially in treating high impact chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes. We are witnessing an increasing number of studies exploring the effective use of web portals in chronic disease management. However, one important aspect that has not received attention is concerned with enhancing the user experience of these portals. As more and more people start browsing the web through their smartphones and tablets, incorporating responsive web design has become crucial, but there is no inclusive study to date on the use of responsive web design to improve the user experience of chronic disease management portals for clinical users. The following presents a framework to improve current approaches to developing disease management web portals using responsive web design.
