Abstract

Swan-Ganz catheter pulmonary artery catheterization is a useful means for the diagnosis and management of pulmonary and cardiovascular disease. This procedure is considered safe and generally associated with a low incidence of major complications: from the more frequent and rarely life-threatening ones related to venous cannulation (e.g., venous access hematoma or air embolism) to those which are extremely rare but potentially fatal (e.g., arrhythmias, infection, pulmonary infarction or pulmonary artery perforation, thromboembolism, or valvular damage).
