Abstract

Nine papers examine the trajectory and dynamics of the adoption of micro-irrigation (MI) systems and analyze the socioeconomic dimensions and impacts of the adoption of MI, including its effect on irrigation water use in crop production and the real costs and benefits of MI adoption. Papers discuss the theory and practice of water-saving and yield-enhancing MI technologies in India (M. Dinesh Kumar); the state of adoption of drip irrigation for crops cultivation in Maharashtra (A. Narayanamoorthy); MI in Karnataka--potential and constraints for adoption (Elumalai Kannan); the state of development and adoption of MI systems in Gujarat (P. K. Viswanathan, Jharna Pathak, and Chandra Sekhar Bahinipati); "wet" water saving and social benefits from MI--a study from the Indira Gandhi Nahar Project command area in Rajasthan (M. Dinesh Kumar); a social benefit-cost analysis of drip irrigation (D. Suresh Kumar); the determinants of adopting and accessing benefits of water-saving technologies--a study of public tube wells with MI systems in North Gujarat (Bahinipati and Viswanathan); managing the groundwater energy nexus in India--the curious case of using solar irrigation pumps with drip systems (Nitin Bassi); and areas for future research (M. Dinesh Kumar, Viswanathan, and Narayanamoorthy). Viswanathan is Associate Professor at the Gujarat Institute of Development Research. M. Dinesh Kumar is Executive Director of the Institute for Resource Analysis and Policy. Narayanamoorthy is Professor and Head in the Department of Economics and Rural Development at Alagappa University. Index.
