Exposure and response prevention is the core element in OCD treatment, also in an outpatient setting. However, a guideline-based treatment is rarely applied in daily routine. This article outlines some of the numerous obstacles and provides several recommendations to overcome them. Based on their substantial experience in practice, the authors provide specific examples on how to conduct intensive exposure and response prevention in an outpatient setting.
