As a textual specification for process definition, XPDL lacks formal semantics which hinders the formal analysis and verification of business processes. In this paper, we provide a method for translating XPDL processes into Petri nets for the formal analysis of XPDL processes. The algorithm validity has been proved, and has also been verified by experiments on artificial and practical processes. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
