Abstract

Hydraulic fracturing—fracking, for short—refers to the stimulation of rock via the injection of fluids, typically water with additives, aiming at increasing the rock’s permeability. For hydrocarbon-bearing rocks, this facilitates the extraction and production of natural gas or oil. It is also common to denote such hydrocarbons as shale gas or shale oil when it is stored in shale with such low permeabilities that it cannot be produced with conventional technologies.
