Abstract

Transverse colostomy is typically indicated under urgent or emergency circumstances for colonic decompression or temporary versus permanent diversion of the fecal stream. This chapter describes construction of the two most common forms of a transverse colostomy. Indications, contraindications and pitfalls, surgical strategy and technique and, perioperative management are all discussed in detail.
