Abstract

This chapter describes the process by which trichloroethylene (TCE) has now been characterized as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” It also summarizes the animal studies and human epidemiological results associated with TCE exposure and kidney cancer that have led to that conclusion. The contribution of TCE metabolism to kidney cancer etiology is discussed, as is some speculation concerning the mechanism of action.
