Abstract

RESTORATION ROW A Mauritanian immigrant in Paris faces the barbarism of racism Soieil ô / Oh, Sun Med Hondo, 1970, Film Foundation/World Cinema Fund ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT THE UNNAMED WEST African man at the center of Med Hondo's first feature does in Paris is pick up a newspaper. Cuts come sharp and fierce; mobile street footage, direct-to-camera interviews, expository dialogue scenes, and passages of steady observation alternate with setpieces in which the camera veers and swerves around its subjects at discomfitingly close range.
