Abstract

The current research, analyses the importance of a maritime vision of geopolitics for the South American coastal countries. A bibliographical research was conducted which included national, regional and international authors, that served to evidence the way geopolitics was originally conceived, its evolution and the need for changes in its approach. It was analyzed, the threats that States would face in the future, such as the lack of food, energy and water, as well as the existence of maritime interests that could supply them. The importance of the maritime vision of geopolitics focuses on the conjugation of elements mentioned before and allows determining that given the future conditions, this geopolitical approach is fundamental for the States, in which the maritime consciousness is one of the essential elements for its construction. In order to reach the different levels of maritime awareness, it is necessary a system involving all actors linked to the maritime sphere, to coordinate and plan all actions leading to achieve that maritime interests are appropriately sized and constituted in the essence of a national development with international vision.
