Abstract

Performing a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on a patient with complex skin issues (prior incisions, trauma, etc.) poses several challenges. We review pre-, intra-, and, postoperative strategies to help with planning and executing a successful TKA in the presence of overlying complex skin and soft tissues. Knowing the patient's surgical history is key to planning a surgical approach; understanding both unique and typical anatomy is essential to prevent complications. Seeking consultation from plastic and vascular surgery colleagues can be helpful in both anticipating complicating factors and optimizing management.
