Abstract

The increase in treatment demands and the high relapse rate for adolescent chemical addiction were the motivation for this research, conducted for a master's degree at the University of South Africa. A qualitative study formed the foundation for a better understanding of the relapse experiences of chemically addicted adolescents. The findings indicate that chemically addicted adolescents are able to describe the precipitating factors to relapses, as well as their aftercare needs. The conclusion was that the social work profession should adapt to the special needs of chemically addicted adolescents, in order to prevent relapses.
