Abstract

In situ experiments, whether carried out in-house or at synchrotron sources, can provide valuable information on the nucleation and subsequent growth of crystals and on the mechanism of growth as well as mechanisms of phase changes and ion- exchange phenomena. This chapter describes the types of x-ray detectors, in situ cells, and detectors used in such studies. The procedures are illustrated by a study of the preparation of a tunnel-structured sodium titanium silicate, the partially niobium framework phase, and the mechanism of ion exchange as revealed by time-resoved x-ray data.
