The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between N nutrition indices and corn grain yield in two management levels, under different rates of nitrogen fertilization. The nutrition indices relative leaf chlorophyll content (RCC), sufficiency index (SI), leaf and plant N content, and accumulated N in leaf and plant were evaluated. Indices were determined in different vegetative development stages and during flowering. The relationship between indices and crop yield was determined in field conditions, with different rates of nitrogen fertilization, during two years, under two levels of management: medium, nonirrigated, and with rates of N between 0 and 150 kg ha -1; and high, irrigated and with rates of N between 0 and 300 or between 0 and 240 kg ha -1. The relationship between mineral N content and total leaf N content was assessed in greenhouse. Nutrition indices show variable performance in predicting corn grain yield, and were influenced by the vegetative development stage and by the management levels. The RCC and SI indices were highly associated with grain yield. The performance of the indices is better in high-level crop management.
