Despite the emergence of renewable sources of energy, oil and gas will continue to play a major role well into the 21st century. The industry, however, is faced with many challenges: fields are being depleted faster than new ones are being discovered; large fields are becoming more and more difficult to find; and compliance with stringent environmental regulations is increasingly demanding. Technology is thus a key factor for maintaining a commercially viable petroleum industry and practicing responsible environmental stewardship. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
