Abstract

H.264/AVC video encoder adapting a rate-distortion optimization technique to select the coding mode for each macroblock (MB) gets a higher coding efficiency than those of previous video coding standards but the computational complexity increases drastically. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose a fast intra mode decision algorithm based on directional information of I4MB. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm generates generally good performances in PSNR, bit rates, and processing time. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
