Abstract

Food and energy supply are probably the highest priorities for humanity, more so because food production and energy sourcing have been inimical to the environment in the last century. The debate “food versus fuel” has arisen due to the rapid expansion of biofuel production as a step toward limiting fossil fuel use and mitigating climate change through renewable energy. Given the fact that first-generation biofuels are made from important food crops and have high land and water requirements, it is obvious that this debate expresses actual and significant concerns about the threat that biofuels pose to food security.
