Close working relationships had been established with children’s nurses in the time of the BPA. It was commonplace in the 1980s and 1990s for children to be nursed on adult wards and by generally trained nurses rather than those with children’s training, and the BPA worked hard to rectify this. A joint approach through working parties and the several reports of the group ‘Caring for Children in the Health Service’ helped to achieve change, but the establishment of the RCPCH brought greater influence (e.g. the establishment of a minister for children, children’s commissioners and a national service framework for children).
