Abstract

Despite their relationship to each other, science fiction should not be mistaken for a form of futurology. Rather, it should be understood as a critical extension of the historical novel, focusing on change so as to emphasize the contingency of current social, political, and economic relations, and utilizing images and ideas of futurity to foreground potentials contained in the present.
