Abstract

Retail business flourished in Barranquilla during the twentieth century, bringing pe-ripheral consumers of the city a great variety of products of the market basket, relegating the use of public markets . The article, combining ethnography, anthropological contributions and analysis of primary and literary sources, describes the state regulation and the business models of foreigners and national migrants that complemented business strategies in the Barranquilla local groceries, preserved and recognized as part of the local heritage .
