Demyelination is characterized by: • Destruction of normal myelin • Relative preservation of axons Demyelinating diseases include (Table 41.1): • Multiple sclerosis (MS) • Neuromyelitis optica (Dévic disease) • Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) • Acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalopathy (AHL) Dysmyelination is characterized by: • Failure to form myelin normally Loss of myelin can be due to an inherited defect of metabolism.
