HIV-associated lipodystrophy is a stigmatising condition characterised by abnormal body fat distribution in HIV-infected individuals. Treatment of facial lipoatrophy, the most common clinical feature, with autologous fat transfer is one of several management options. This chapter describes the history of autologous fat transfer and summarises the scientific evidence relating to controversies with this technique. It also provides an overview of HIV lipodystrophy and discusses published reports of treatment with autologous fat transfer with regard to specific management issues, clinical outcome and comparison with other treatment options.
