Abstract

The process of adding information to an optical wave in UWOC is modulation. A modulator is an electro-optical converter that causes a parameter of the output beam (intensity, frequency, phase, polarization state, beam/photon orbit angular momentum, etc.) to vary with the signal, which is the process of modulation of light. This chapter describes the modulation, demodulation, and coding of optical signals.
