Abstract

In this chapter, the research perspective of the volume is introduced. Firstly, three major changes of the governance of research are described: the changing relationship of government and universities, new instruments and roles at the organisational level and the the role of the European Commission as a funding agency. Secondly, the governance theory is presented as an analytical perspective for the study of these changes. Thirdly a brief introduction of the chapters is given.
