Abstract

The implementation of Herschel as one of the most powerful space telescopes ever built was possible thanks to key inventions and innovations. They result from a long-term process, leading to the required scientific performances and an efficient mission management. The innovation process started during the design of the mission and finished with the final breath of the cryostat. This chapter examines the concept of innovation and apply it to the system design process and management that shaped the success of the Herschel mission. 5.1
