Establishing and maintaining positive nutritional patterns during adolescence is of vast importance for supporting optimal growth and development. The physical, emotional, and neurobiological growth that occurs during this stage relies on consistent, adequate, and appropriate intake of energy and micronutrients. Further, establishing a healthy relationship with food during childhood and adolescence sets the stage for eating habits that support chronic disease prevention, a healthy body weight, and body satisfaction. This chapter will attempt to summarize the following: key developmental considerations during adolescence such as the significant physical growth and changes occurring during and around the pubertal growth spurt; the increased energy and nutrient demands of the body systems as well as the potential adverse implications if needs are not met; and typical nutrition patterns and problems among adolescents. Adolescence is a challenging period full of transition and change. By equipping healthcare providers, adolescents, and their families with a working understanding of the physical changes and their accompanying nutrition implications, adolescents can move through this critical period with the support they need to optimize their experience mentally, emotionally, and physically.
