A simple population genetics model for a quantitative character is considered in an ecological frame. On the basis of this model, there is examination of the interplay between genetics and ecology. Using an exploitative competition model, the questions asked are: what constraints does ecology give to the genetics and vice versa? Are species and genotypes more or less interchangeable if competition is defined as passive, ie if individuals feel the presence of other individuals just by a depletion of resources? And does genetics add to the understanding of community evolution?-from Author
