Abstract

For a few years now it has been possible to intubate with a fiberoptic laryngoscope in difficult cases. Different kinds of flexible and rigid instruments are available. Numerous measures can help when intubation proves difficult, and there are also different methods of anesthesia and intubation, which can be selected according to the situation and experience. The main advantage of the fiberoptic intubation as opposed to conventional methods -especially blind nasal intubation and retrograde techniques - is that it can be performed under visualization. For this reason it is safer, less traumatic, and more successful than other methods. This article deals with the most important practical aspects of fiberoptic intubations, especially with the technique of anesthesia, indications, various methods, and safety measures, as well as advantages and disadvantages.
