We have passed through the early stages of the development of tissue engineering as a new discipline. We have made progress and have moved cautiously and we have made our mistakes. From both our successes and failures, we now are poised to design new regenerative tissue formation strategies to provide for functional tissue repair. The perfection of this new science will be functional tissue engineering.
